Numbers that Matter
The Canadian economy added 25,000 jobs in November, slightly above what analysts expected. However, the unemployment rate rose to 5.8 percent, as the population grew faster than the number of jobs. This is the highest unemployment rate since April, when the economy was recovering from the pandemic.
The sectors that saw the most job growth were manufacturing and construction, while the sectors that lost the most jobs were wholesale and retail trade as well as finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing.
The increase in the unemployment rate reflects the challenges that the Canadian economy is facing, such as high-interest rates, low consumer confidence, and global trade tensions.
